title: "a life filled with spontaneous interests"
pubDate: 'Dec 23 2023'

My whole life I've always been drawn to learning new things, ranging from random knowledge to diverse skills I just wanted to "master". Some of these hobbies have included graphic design, embroidery, learning capitals around the world, and solving a Rubik's cube, among others. I've noticed that I'm easily influenced by the media I consume, but in a positively enriching way. This semester has been a pretty good example of this.
For instance, I watched **The Queen's Gambit** this semester and immediately felt the urge to learn more about chess. I began playing more on [**Chess.com**](https://chess.com) and even bought myself a chessboard to practice on. It's something I continue to want to get better at, and someday hope to be somewhat decent at.
Some weeks later I remembered my girlfriend had some juggling balls laying around in her apartment, and I asked if I could borrow them. One week later, after spending almost all my mini-breaks from schoolwork juggling, I finally learned to juggle for a whole minute. Juggling turned out to be not just a physical exercise but a kind of moving meditation, helping me focus and clear my mind.
Next up, inspired by one of [**PewDiePie's videos**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0zminwWyxI) where he learned 7 things in 7 days, I decided to try spinning a frisbee on my finger. Yep, you guessed it right. I started practicing, and although I haven't "mastered" it yet, the process has been a lot of fun.
In a way, these hobbies are more than just pastimes. They are reflections of my curiosity and joy of learning. While each hobby is different, they all share a thread of creativity and challenge that appeals to my nature.
Reflecting on these spontaneous interests, I realize they've brought more to my life than just moments of fun and learning. They've taught me the value of adaptability, the joy of small victories, and the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. In a cliche way, these moments of falling into rabbit holes isn't just about the hobbies themselves, but about the journey of discovery and the endless possibilities that life offers.
On that I would like to end this post by encouring you to explore some new spontaneous interests of yours, or maybe even try some of the stuff I mentioned above! Feel free to [**reach out**](/connect) if you come across something exciting and would like to share it :)

title: "from hugo to astro"
pubDate: 'Dec 27 2023'

During the summer this year I heard about a new web framework called [**Astro**](https://astro.build/). A new web framework with next-gen frontend architecture. After browsing through [**their showcase**](https://astro.build/showcase/) section on the website and reading more about it, I got the idea of remaking my website with Astro to learn more about the framework. Also, it's just a fun side project to work on as we don't learn a lot of frontend stuff at university.
Previously, the website was built with the static site generator [**Hugo**](https://gohugo.io/), which I was quite satisfied with. The performance was quite good, and the development experience was great, so it was kinda scary to redo the site.
Moving to Astro, I found myself immersed in an incredibly satisfying developer experience. The ***'only ship what's necessary'*** approach really resonated with me. This principle ensures that only the required bits are sent to the browser, making the site super fast and efficient. What I found particularly cool about Astro is its ability to integrate with components from other frameworks. This meant I could leverage the strengths of multiple frameworks, bringing a new level of flexibility and power to my project (even though I still haven't actually done this for the site yet hehe).
As the project gets more and more worked on, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and pride in building my website from the ground up with Astro. The excitement of choosing my own layout and colors, exploring different design ideas, and learning new things along the way was exhilarating. This wasn't just a technical exercise; it was a creative journey. The process of building, experimenting, and seeing the ideas come to life on the screen was not only fun but incredibly rewarding. Ive gained not just a new website, but also invaluable skills and knowledge that will undoubtedly help me in future projects.
In conclusion, the shift to Astro has been a wonderful adventure. It shows the joys of exploring new technologies and the endless possibilities they bring to the realm of web development.
If you got any ideas for my website, found a bug or just want to say hello? [**Reach out**](/connect) to me 🫶

title: "making the leap - my journey from windows to arch linux"
pubDate: 'Sep 20 2023'
description: "i use arch btw."
draft: false
---
Transitioning from one operating system to another is never a simple endeavor (no pun intended?? #endeavouros). For many, such a journey can seem daunting, filled with unknown terminology, new tools, and a steep learning curve. For me, the leap from Windows to Arch Linux was driven by passion, curiosity, and a desire to be part of a community that champions open-source values. Heres my experience after a month of getting the hang of Arch.
### Discovering the World of Open Source
My intrigue towards Linux and open-source software stemmed from my involvement with my studentorganization, ["friByte"](https://fribyte.no). As I delved into the world of free and open-source software, I realized the immense potential it holds. Not just in terms of software freedom, but also for its capacity to foster community-driven development and collaboration.
### Testing the Waters with EndeavourOS
Before diving straight into Arch, I got my feet wet with EndeavourOS. For those unfamiliar, EndeavourOS offers a user-friendly gateway to the world of Arch Linux. While it was an ok - but pleasant - experience, a nudge from a close friend made me contemplate venturing deeper into the Arch ecosystem.
### The Trials of Installing Arch
Arch Linux, renowned for its flexibility and simplicity, doesn't come without its challenges, especially for us newcomers. My installation journey saw three attempts. One of those was facilitated by the installation script, which aimed to streamline the process. But it wasn't just the technical hurdles that I had to overcome; it was also about understanding the philosophy behind Arch, the manual approach to everything.
Thankfully, I wasn't alone in this expedition. Friends from friByte, and outside (shoutout [Albert](https://github.com/albertbayazidi)), became my guiding stars, offering help, resources, and moral support lol. Their experiences and insights were invaluable.
### Oops! The Dual Boot Dilemma
In my enthusiasm, I overlooked a crucial detail: I still needed Windows for my schoolwork. This realization led me to my next challenge: dual-booting. Armed with Gparted, a powerful partitioning tool, I (with help) managed to carve out space for both operating systems to coexist harmoniously on my machine. I also got the Windows partition to show up in my grub also.
Thank you for the help [Rolf](https://github.com/polsevev) & [Johannes](https://github.com/skivdal)!
### The *Ricing* Rabbit Hole
Once Arch was up and running, my creative juices started flowing. I had heard about "ricing" the art of customizing your Linux distro to make it aesthetically pleasing and functionally efficient. It wasn't long before I found myself deep in forums, tutorials, and Reddit threads (*r/unixporn <3*), absorbing every piece of information on the topic.
The result? A meticulously customized desktop environment that reflected my personality, needs and love for [Catppuccin Macchiato](https://github.com/catppuccin/catppuccin/tree/main) lmao. I also created a [dotfiles repository](https://github.com/SindreKjelsrud/dotfiles) to manage and backup my configuration, ensuring that I could recreate my setup anywhere, anytime.
It is still a WIP, but I'm super-happy with how it is so far!
### Wrapping Up
The journey from Windows to Arch Linux was filled with ups and downs. It demanded patience, persistence, and a willingness to learn. But every challenge met was a lesson learned, and every obstacle overcome was a testament to the supportive community that surrounds the world of open-source.
Today, I can confidently say that making the switch was worth every second of effort. Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of my computer's workings, but I also feel like I've become a part of a vibrant community that believes in sharing, collaborating, and pushing the boundaries of what software can do.
To anyone contemplating a similar journey, I say: Take the leap. Embrace the challenges. And most importantly, cherish the community. They're, as ChatGPT quoted while helping me wrapping up this post, ***"the heart and soul of the open-source world"***.

title: "pokémon yellow: a timeless masterpiece"
pubDate: 'Dec 11 2023'
description: "🕹️ retro game love"
draft: false
---
Last year I [gave my old GameBoy Color a new life](/blog/gameboy_color) by modding it with a whole new screen and shell! It was such a cool experience and using it has been awesome. I got Pokémon Yellow for it, since it's one of my favorites in the series, and it did not disappoint!🤩 While playing through it I got the idea to write a blogpost about how unqiue it is, and why it still remains ***a timeless masterpiece of the Pokémon series***.
## Pikachu's Emotions 🥰
From the moment you start your journey, Pikachu is by your side, not just as another entry in a Pokédex, but as a partner on your adventure. Pokémon Yellow was the first game in the series to incorporate a Pokémon's feelings and emotions toward its trainer. By interacting with Pikachu, players could measure its mood, from happiness to outright disdain. This feature added depth and an emotional connection that was lacking in other titles. Pikachu wasnt just another Pokémon; it was YOUR Pikachu.
> Try talking to it after it learns Thunderbolt!
## A Unique Experience ✨
On the topic of other titles we can take a look at Pokémon Yellow compared to newer games in the series. It's strength lays in it's simplicity compared to the many added layers of complexity in the newer ones. It provides a pure, exciting Pokémon experience. It reminds players of a time when the thrill of catching a rare Pokémon or battling a gym leader was unparalleled.
## Walking is Wonderful 🚶
Maybe one of my favorite things in this game would be the decision to not include a running mechanic. In an era where every game is a race against time, it encourages players to savor every interaction, every patch of grass, and every challenge. It teaches players patience, and it made every wild Pokémon encounter so much more thrilling.
## Surfing Pikachu 🏄
Some out of the box thinking by the developers gave players a mini-game providing unexpected amounts of joy! Like what, a mini-game where you can be Pikachu and surf the waves like it does in the anime? You'll see me like Fry from Futurama wanting this game solely because of that!💥💥💥💳💥💥💥💳 (only downside for this was the need for Pokémon Stadium N64..)
## The Autentic Sprites 🖼
This game also showcased some of the most genuine, original and vibrant Pokémon sprites. It gave us players an authentic feel reminiscent of the animated series, bridging the gap between two mediums. The designs had personality, it had character and even charm! It's art.
## Conclusion
While the newer games bring clean, shiny graphics, vast worlds, and fresh mechanics, Pokémon Yellow stands as a beacon of what made Pokémon special in the first place. It captured the essence of the Pokémon world in it's purest form, reminding us of the joy of simple adventures, the pleasure of forming bonds, and the thrill of *becoming the very best, like no one ever was*.😙🤌

title: "the cozy corners of cyberspace"
pubDate: 'Dec 17 2023'
description: ""

As of lately I've gotten more and more fascinated by the lesser-known realms of the interwebs, also called the **'small web'**. This is, in my opinion, the Internet's lost charm. Everything nowadays feels just like a cramped city center on the web.
Everything from personal websites, blogs, forums and so on thrive on individuality and passion rather than likes and shares. The authenticity that these small web spaces have just gives me a big breath of fresh air. They offer a genuine glimpse into the minds and hearts of their creators, free from the pressures of algorithmic popularity. I love how creative people can be in their own, little corner of the Internet!
I've found so many unique and cool websites! Some of these are:
- [**WindowSwap**](https://www.window-swap.com/)
- [**ivy's garden**](https://randomivysaur.bearblog.dev/)
- [**toyos.dev**](https://toyos.dev/)
- [**~dustin**](https://tilde.town/~dustin/)
- [**Nick's neocity**](https://starrs.neocities.org/tinyspace/?e=/tinyspace/home)
Exploring the small web is like taking a relaxed walk through a calm forest, far from the city's noise and clutter. Each website is like a pathway to new discoveries and perspectives.
For those, like me, feeling overwhelmed by the digital version of a cramped city center, I encourage you to explore the small web instead of those mainstream platforms. I find this much more giving than doomscrolling for hours on end.
But where do you find these websites? Good question! You can find them by just getting recommendations from your friends, which is a reason for you to have a blogroll/feedroll - [**like mine**](/bookmarks). Some other places to discover these websites are:
- [**The Forest**](https://theforest.link/)
- [**bearblog.dev**](https://bearblog.dev/)
- [**Neocities**](https://neocities.org/browse)
And the different performance-focused clubs like:
- [**1MB Club**](https://1mb.club/)
- [**512KB Club**](https://512kb.club/)
- [**1kB Club**](https://1kb.club/).
On an ending note I think you should explore the web like you're wandering through a forest. Every click takes you somewhere new. Have fun finding your way and seeing what's around each corner of the web.

title: "the quiet joy of creating cairns"
pubDate: 'Feb 28 2024'

---
There's something inherently meditative about stacking stones, one over the other, to create a cairn. It's such a simple thing that requires patience, focus, and a gentle touch, that's drawing you into the present moment. Each stone, with its unique shape and weight, challenges me to find its perfect place in the stack, creating this inner state of calm. The result is not "just" a stack of stones, but a representation of the builder's time and effort.
Whether it's by a beautiful lake or on a windswept hill, building cairns has become a way for me to just slow down. It makes me have this deep feeling of calm, You can say it's kinda like a reminder that even the simplest things can make you happy and content.
You might have noticed that my website features a dedicated gallery to [**my cairn collection**](/gallery/cairns). This page showcases my creations before they are either dismantled or left alone to shine in it's dedicated spot. It's like a personal journal, capturing moments of joy experienced during each build.
Building cairns is more than a hobby for me; it's a practice that centers me. The process of selecting each stone, contemplating its placement, and witnessing the cairn come to life is a profound experience. It's an exercise in mindfulness, where the world falls away, leaving only the stone, the environment around, and me.
I hope to share this passion and perhaps inspire you to find your own zen in the art form of cairn building. Whether you're looking for a new way to connect with nature, a mindfulness practice, or simply a creative outlet, cairn building offers something unique. It's a reminder that beauty and peace can be constructed from the ground up, one stone at a time.

title: "why you should get the nintendo wii in 2023"
pubDate: 'Feb 06 2023'
description: ""
draft: false
---
### Introduction
Before you start, yes I know the Switch is the handheld/home console go-to for most people when it comes to Nintendo. It's the handheld/home console hybrid that is the name in gaming at the moment, but let me show you why exactly the Wii is the better choice!
But first, let's give the Wii an introduction!
> The Nintendo Wii was released in 2006 and is one of the most popular and influential video game consoles of all time.
> Despite it being over a decade old, the Wii remains a highly sought after gaming system, even in the 2020s!
> It was notable for its innovative use of motion control, allowing players to control games using physical gestures and movements, instead of traditional buttons and joysticks. This unique feature made the Wii incredibly popular, particularly among casual gamers, and helped to expand the gaming demographic.
So why is it that the Nintendo Wii still remains so sought after? Well let me list a few reasons why.
### Huge library of games
First of all, the huge library of games. The Wii has an extensive library of classic games that are still beloved by players today.
These popluar franchises, like "**Mario**" and "**Zelda**", and the cult favorites, like "**WarioWare**" and "**MadWorld**", are just some of the games the Wii has to offer. They still hold up today, provide hours of fun and entertainment and are for all players of any age.
A good example of one of the perfect games on the Wii is of course **Mario Kart**.
It has many good maps, exclusive vehicles (which other games doesn't have), many good characters, great gameplay (including really fun and sometimes even satisfying/epic moments), good bots that are though to beat and much more!
Also (almost) everyone knows about **Mario Kart** and have most likely played it atleast once, so it's perfect for get-togethers!
### Modding
Secondly, the Wii has such a huge modding community. Why this is a reason alone to buy the Wii?
Well since the 20th of May in 2014 the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Service was discontinued. This meant that the online functionality of the Nintendo Wii was gone. But thanks to the modding community players can now play online again!
For those of you who couldn't care less about playing online, well I got two words for you.
> **Free**. **Games**.
As the Wii has USB and SD card support you can, after homebrewing your Wii, load up games via these mediums. The games iso's you can find all over the internet so I won't link anything, but it's quite easy to find!
Also another perk is just getting the possibility to fully customize your Wii to your liking with themes and so on.
> **Note:** All Wiis are NOT the same! For example, a Wii Mini is more difficult to mod and have fewer functions than other Wiis.
### Affordable
Another reason to get it is because of how affordable it is! Compared to newer gaming systems, the Wii is relatively affordable, making it a great option for families or individuals on a budget.
Since the Wii has been around for over a decade, there are plenty of used systems available for even less than 50$. It also still hasn't become one of those collectible consoles yet so that's good!
The cheapest I've found was a Mario 25th anniversary red Wii for 20 dollars, and it included two games and one controller.
### Easy to use / Family-friendly
The Wii is also so easy to use because of its unique motion controls! This makes the Wii a great family-friendly console, which will bring fun for the whole family with plenty of games for all ages.
Because of the Wii's unique motion controls it makes it accessible to people of all ages and skill levels, and also makes the experience much more intuitive and immersive!
> Anyways, who doesn't want to beat their whole family in Mario Kart?!
### Conclusion
In conclusion, the Nintendo Wii is (in my opinion) a must-have gaming console, still in 2023!
Yeah yeah, you already know that the Switch is great, but if you're looking for a Nintendo experience outside the mainstream, the Wii is your choice.
With such a large library of classic games, a big modding scene, affordable prices, easy-to-use motion controls, and much more, the Wii offers a unique and enjoyable gaming experience that you won't find on any other console.
> **On a finishing note,** how can you resist not going back to play as Funkykong?
